What To Do If You Have an Eye Emergency

First things first. Don’t panic! Staying calm is the best way to help you think straight and help those around you to remain calm. Often, it’s not necessary to go to an emergency room for eye emergencies. In fact, the vast majority of people who go to the emergency room for eye care could have received treatment from their local optometrist instead.

If you’re unsure whether you’re experiencing an eye emergency, give us a call immediately! Delay may increase the risk of serious complications and may result in vision loss.

Until you see your eye doctor or seek urgent care, avoid the following:

  • Don’t try to remove an embedded object out of your eye
  • If your eye is injured, don't press on it or rub it
  • Dry cotton and sharp instruments such as tweezers should never be used on the eye.

Whether you've had a workplace accident or an at-home incident, our eye doctors are here to help

Eye Emergencies FAQs

What is considered an eye emergency?

Eye emergencies are anything that may cause permanent damage to your eyes or vision without timely intervention from an eye care professional.

The most common types of eye emergencies include:

  • A blow, poke or other trauma to the eye
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Chemical spills in the eye
  • Foreign object embedded in the eye
  • Sudden appearance of light flashes or floaters
  • Contact lens lost in the eye
Does an eye infection require urgent care?

Symptoms of an eye infection typically include itching, burning, redness, crusty and watery eyes. See a Hartley eye doctor if your symptoms last over 4 days or if you experience intense pain, redness, blurred vision or light sensitivity.

What should I do if a foreign object enters my eye?

Most of the time, a person can easily remove debris from the eye by repeatedly blinking to get the debris out. If that doesn't work, you can wash your eye with saline (sterile salt water) to flush out any dust and dirt from your eye, or use streaming tap water.

However, to scratch your cornea while attempting to get an object out which can cause further site-threatening complications.

So the best thing you can do in this kind of eye emergency is to get to your eye doctor in Hartley as soon as possible.

I’ve been going to Eyes On Lincoln, since I moved to Lincoln Nebraska 7 years ago, the service was... so great I didn’t feel the need to look any farther.

New patient here! So far today was my first visit/exam. I called yesterday knowing it may take a bit... to get in, so when they called back having an opening today I jumped on it. My favorite frames broke and I was about due for an exam anyways. Going in I was greeted right away. I made sure to show up ten minutes early to get the paperwork out of the way (which wasn't bad at all and the front desk did good explaining it all.) Right when my appointment time showed, I was being called back already. First time not needing to wait compared to other places in town! With the updated technology since my last exam, it was pretty new to me but they did so great taking the time to explain each piece of equipment, and answering my random questions. When I got to the last room to be met by Dr. Weber, again I only sat for maybe five minutes tops. He showed me my scans and finished the exam. When I explained my concern of wanting to find frames similar in weight more than the looks, he introduced me to someone who knew exactly what would fit best for me. In total I was in and out in about 40 minutes. For me that's the quickest it's been. Glasses should be in in about 2 weeks which is normal for any place, will do a fitment then and give update.

I have came here for years up from a teen until an adult. I now have a 10 year old who is practicall... y blind and a serial glasses breaker 😂 I was so stressed about how to get him more glasses before school because we were just there Renee (sorry if I misspelled your name) made it so easy for me and was very patient with me. I thank you it’s enough stress I have to come in every couple of months so her being so helpful and kind definitely relieved me of some of my stress! Thank you and you definitely made my day!

I can’t say enough of how professional they have been from start to finish. Mikayla the contact le... ns specialist was knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. Steve is a master of his craft! It’s refreshing to have such an experience after having a horrible experience with Americas “best” I was referred to Steve and Eyes on Lincoln! Best in the business

I love how persistent they are with reminding you on appointments, and making sure you’re getting ... taken care of. For someone like me who is very forgetful, and tend to push off appointments, I appreciate them being kind to me & giving friendly reminders. The O street location, has a elderly lady, who shows so much compassion for the patients and helping in anyway she can. Unfortunately, I forgot her name. 🙁 BUT you’ll definitely see her when you go to pick out your glasses. She’s too sweet to miss! Thank you for working with me with my insurance & be a great place to go to for eye care!

Dr.Gilsersleeve is one of the best eye doctors in Nebraska. My experience was great, I didn't feel ... rushed, and my expectations were met as I didn't leave with having more questions. It's refreshing having actual time with a doctor now. Dr Gildersleeve also explained financial options for me. I didn't feel pressured in buying the most expensive pair of glasses and Mallory even advised which one of the two frames I was looking at would work better with progressive lenses. Fully Satisfied 🙂
